The Truth About Branding When You’re Starting Small

  • Why most new business owners overthink design...

I must admit, I'm beyond guilty of this mistake. I can't tell you countless number of businesses and brands for myself that I never, ever, launched. As a creative, my rush and excitement comes from brainstorming my next big money-making endeavor, the concept and color palates entailed, and day dreaming of how streamlined and focused my content will be as it helps thousands of women and moms like myself create an income of their dreams.

You see what I did just then? In write that brief paragraph I've already mapped the entire future of said company in under five minutes. The truth is, as fun as the branding process of creating a business can be, that's not at all the nuts and bolts needed to create and sustain a financially viable business.

Focus on the framework of your business that will actually keep you in business.

Step 1 — Define Your Brand Personality

  • Choose colors, fonts, and tone that reflect your vision

  • Complete my free & simple, Brand Personality Quiz (basically an “If your business was a person…” playbook). This quick & easy exercise will help you bring your brand to life so it's less of a foggy vision in your mind.

Step 2 — Use Canva Templates to Keep Your Brand Consistent

  • Canva is a solopreneur’s best friend

Canva has become my go-to for EVERYTHING design! I love the platform for numerous reasons but the main ones being it's affordability & simple customization tools. Canva has a free version, a paid "Pro" plan, and a "Teams" plan. The free plan costs $0, while the Pro plan ranges from $15 per month to $120 per year for a single user, and the Teams plan is currently priced at $100 per year or $10 per month per user. They also offer Canva for Nonprofits (free access to Canva Pro features for eligible non-profit organizations) and Canva for Education (free access to Pro and premium features for teachers and students in K-12).

Step 3 — Adopt "Beautiful Brand on a Budget" Design Hacks

  • Download my Budget-Friendly Design Sources Guidebook

As a startup company & solopreneur funds are usually little to nonexistent for most of us so saving where you can will become your top priority. My free, Budget-Friendly Design Sources Guidebook, contains the best & majority-FREE design tools I use to create branded template designs, SEO-rich captions, and royalty-free photos, videos, and music downloads. If designing from "scratch" still feels a bit overwhelming, check out my premade design bundles that could have your website and brand live in as little as a day!

Step 4 — Stay Consistent Across Platforms

  • Great News: You DON'T need to be everywhere, for everybody, for everything

  1. Determine your desired audience & where they're located

  2. How much time you want/have to dedicate to creating, editing, posting your content (not to mention engaging with your audience)

Start with one platform, master it, stay consistent, then add another platform one by one. Embrace the pace which also allows for R & D (Research and Development), that will keep your business thriving for the long haul.

Final Thoughts: Build With Confidence, Not Comparison

As Theodore Roosevelt would say, "comparison is the thief of joy". Constantly comparing your brand & it's progress to others WILL lead to feelings of inadequacy, unhappiness, and the notion that you're always behind. The little voice inside of you will "should" all over yourself, 24/7, 365 days of the year. You'll think "I should be doing this, I should have done that, what should I be doing now or the next day?"

Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your business be. Accept that early on & remind yourself daily if you want to keep your sanity.
